July 16, 2018 After careful consideration and consultation with Fisheries and Land Resources, the Fire Department has temporarily lifted the Fire Ban in Conception Bay South. Most forest fires are started when the Fire Index is in the LOW to MODERATE range, so we encourage residents to remain cautious if having an open fire. All aspects of the Town’s Open Air Fire Regulations remain in effect and permits for an open fire will be required from both the Conception Bay South Fire Department and Fisheries and Land Resources (Forestry Division at Paddy’s Pond). We would like to remind residents who wish to burn brush, leaves or fallen trees to please do so with caution. Permits are required and can be obtained from Fire Station 1 in Kelligrews or Fire Station 2 in Topsail. Residents who wish to burn are reminded to be cautious and courteous to surrounding properties. Homes with air exchangers and heat pumps are continuously circulating air from the outside and any sort of outside fire can quickly cause a neighboring home to fill with smoke. The Town of Conception Bay South is happy to announce that the pool will reopen on Tuesday, July 10. As a thank you to our patrons for your patience and understanding during the pool repairs, we will be offering all swims free of charge for the first week, from July 10-15. The Town is diligently working towards a new and improved registration system that will enhance the registration process for all Town programs, including swimming lesson registration. Fireworks can be a fun and exciting addition to any social event. However, please keep in mind that fireworks can also be a form of distress to some children, adults and pets. A permit is required to discharge fireworks within the Town of Conception Bay South. The free permit is available at Station 1 in Kelligrews from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Permits are not required for fireworks displays on Canada Day and New Year’s Eve. The Town of Conception Bay South and the Pride in Your Community Committee are once again looking for the best local gardens! It’s easy to nominate your garden (or the garden of a friend)! Always use caution when burning in an outdoor fire pit, wood burning oven, or chimenea. During the summer, many people enjoy gathering around a fire. However, outdoor fireplaces can be harmful if not used properly, and can be bothersome to surrounding neighbours. GUIDELINES Backyard fireplaces should be built into the ground, or on brick, stone or other non-combustible surface with a minimum surface area of 1.5 metres. The Town of Conception Bay South would like to advise residents that the water main flushing program has begun and will continue throughout the summer months. During the flushing process, residents may experience minor water discoloration and pressure changes, however water service should not be disrupted. Flushing is generally conducted between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Water may be cloudy for up to four hours. Dr. Adrian Power: Chairperson Dr. Adrian Power is a local dentist who has volunteered in the community for many years. He has coached numerous sports teams, was a member of the Monument of Honour Committee, and was the Medical Director during the 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games. Most recently, he was named the 2017-2018 Conception Bay South and CBS Lions Club Citizen of the Year. The Town of Conception Bay South delivered its 2018 budget at the regular public Council meeting on December 19, 2017.  It is a balanced budget and lays the groundwork for the year ahead while holding the line on property taxes.
