Town Celebrates Second Community Garden Location

Conception Bay South now has a second community garden, thanks to dedicated efforts by the Town of Conception Bay South, the CBS Garden Committee, Manuels River, and the Rotary Avalon Northeast. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Monday, October 5, 2020 to celebrate the new garden, located at Manuels River.

“Community gardens, like the one we have on Graham Mifflen Drive, and now here at Manuels River, provide residents with beautiful spaces to enjoy gardening, learn about growing food, and take part in special events. The keyword in community gardening is ‘community’. These gardens are gathering places where everyone is welcome to contribute and enjoy. The CBS Community Garden Committee initiated this wonderful project and they certainly deserve recognition for their hard work,” said Deputy Mayor Richard Murphy.

The new community garden at Manuels River features a greenhouse with a rustic design, numerous raised, accessible beds for planting, ground level beds for a wide range of plants, and a free seed and book library.

“This project has been a collaboration between the partners, volunteers and our generous business sponsors. It is such a powerful thing when groups and individuals can come together in the spirit of community. The bigger the collaboration, the more deeply it is rooted in our community, and the larger the impact,” said Amanda Janes, committee member.

“We were blown away by the generosity of the many local businesses who came forward, eager to offer their time, expertise, and materials to make this initiative a reality. Many of these businesses are providing ongoing support, which truly demonstrates their commitment to the project and to building community,” said Julia Bloomquist, committee member.
