Get Your Free Radon Test Kit!

The Town of Conception Bay South, in partnership with Take Action on Radon, is working to raise awareness about radon exposure.  The Town is once again offering free radon test kits to residents, with registration starting Thursday, November 7, at 10:30 a.m. Residents can register online for one of 200 test kits, available on a first-come, first-served basis. The link will go live on our website below at that time.

Please note that registration for test kits is now full. Thank you for your interest.

Public Information Session: Once registered, residents will be encouraged to attend the virtual Radon Information Session via Zoom on Monday, November 25, at 7:00 p.m. A Zoom link will be e-mailed to those who sign up for the program.

Kit Pick-Up: There has been a delay in the delivery of radon test kits. Residents will be notified via e-mail once the kits have arrived at the Town Hall and are ready for pick up. ID with proof of residency will be required at the time of collection.

Understanding Your Radon Levels: Once participants have conducted the radon testing in their homes, the kits will be sent to Take Action On Radon. Subsequently, residents will receive individualized reports indicating the radon levels in their homes, if any. The Town of Conception Bay South will also receive an aggregated report, providing an overview of radon levels within the community.

About Radon

Radon is a well-established human carcinogen, and testing and reducing radon levels is essential for lung cancer prevention. Radon is a colourless, odourless gas that can infiltrate buildings. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and can be found in elevated concentrations in homes across the country. The good news is that testing for and mitigating radon levels in your home is relatively easy. Since 2017, the National Building Code of Canada has mandated a rough-in for future radon venting in new homes. For homes built before 2017, radon venting can be retrofitted within the property.

Funding for this project is provided by the Town of Conception Bay and Health Canada.
