Seniors

The Town of Conception Bay South offers many programs, events, and informational resources for seniors. This page is designed to act as a road map for all residents to discover and learn information that is directly relevant to seniors.

Advisory: Please be advised of an error recently published in the Shoreline regarding the Seniors Tax Incentive. The Town’s incentive program for those 65 and older is 5% up to a maximum of $100. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.  If you have any further questions, please contact Finance at 845-6500 ext. 201.

Taxes

As a senior living in Conception Bay South, you may be entitled to a Seniors Property Tax Deduction or a Low Income Tax Deduction.  To apply for these programs, you can complete the forms below and submit to the Department of Finance at the Town Hall, or email completed forms to finance@conceptionbaysouth.ca. Paper forms are also available at the Town of Conception Bay South Town Hall.

A Senior’s Discount, as outlined in the annual Schedule of Rates and Fees, is available to senior citizens who meet the following criteria:

  • All prior year’s taxes must be paid to qualify;
  • The individual is 65 years or older in the current year (January 1 to December 31);
  • The individual is the registered owner and occupies the property as their principal place of residence year round;
  • All taxes are paid on or before the due date or arrangements have been made under the Equal Payment Program.
  • Residents who meet these criteria must request the Senior’s Discount and present proof
    of age.
  • Retroactive discounts will not be considered.
  • This discount cannot be combined with the Senior Citizen’s Property Tax Reduction or the Low Income Reduction.

Garbage & Recycling

The Town of Conception Bay South strives to provide effective and efficient waste collection programs for residents, while keeping workers safe.

The Town also offers bulk waste services to its residents, including pick ups from a residence by appointment. This service is free for seniors over 65. For more information on this service, please click here.

Our Department of Recreation ans Leisure Services offers a variety of events throughout the year for seniors. Look for the annual seniors events, as well as all town events, in our events calendar or visit Programs and Activities for a full listing of current offerings.

Seniors Socials

Join us for a delicious lunch, followed by an afternoon social and dance with local entertainment. These events are free to the public.

Seniors Bus Outings

Let us do the driving as we travel to local sites and activities. These socials take place between May to October each year.

Celebrate Seniors in Conception Bay South

This is a 3-day celebration for Seniors in our community and includes fitness, educational and social opportunities for seniors.

Walking for Wellness

Explore the beautiful paths and trails of Conception Bay South with this guided walking program. This is a free program that goes ahead rain or shine. There’s a winter set (combination of snowshoe and indoor walks), spring set and fall set. Learn more.

Swimming at the Recreation Complex

Our pool facility offers many opportunities for seniors including Shallow Water Fitness, Seniors Swims, Adult Leisure Swims, a hot tub and sauna facility. View the pool schedule.

Conception Bay South Arena Walking Track

The walking track at the Conception Bay South Arena is offered to the public free of charge. The track is open to the public during regular operation hours, unless there is a paid ticketed and/or private rental event occurring.

The Town of Conception Bay South has formed a Seniors Advisory Committee to provide insight and experience to the Town on all matters involving seniors. View the Terms of Reference of the Seniors Advisory Committee. The purpose of this committee is to provides advice to the Town of Conception Bay South regarding matters of interest for senior citizens living within the boundaries of the Town, and to ensure that senior citizens have a voice for input into Town programs, operations and services.

General duties include:

  • To liaise with Representatives of the Town of Conception Bay South regarding civic matters of interest to Seniors living within the boundaries of the Town;
  • Provide advice and perspective to the Town on its policies, services and programs that pertain to seniors;
  • Identify gaps and barriers and suggest solutions to the participation of seniors in all aspects of Town programming;
  • To promote and advocate, wherever appropriate, the concept of healthy aging for seniors
  • To work cooperatively with external agencies whose activities affect seniors living within the Town.
