Recreation Complex Programs
We would like to inform you that the Red Cross has made small changes to ensure you and your children have an enjoyable swimming experience. We are proud to offer you the chance to participate in a revamped preschool program consisting of 8 levels including Starfish, Duck, Sea Turtle, Sea Otter, Salamander, Sunfish, Crocodile and Whale. Sea Otter was added to provide a better transition level for swimmers from Sea Turtle as they move to greater independence, as well as making it a more manageable level for new swimmers. Participants will enter Sea Otter when they have completed Sea Turtle or it is their first time in lessons. For those swimmers who are currently registered in Salamander they will continue to stay in that level until it is complete and continue to work their way through the preschool program.
Adult Swim Program
The Conception Bay South Recreation Complex currently offers both Red Cross Swim Basics and Red Cross Swim Strokes. These swimming programs are designed to meet your individual needs. The Junior Lifeguard Club
The Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) offers serious fun for kids 8 years and up who can swim at least 25m and tread water for 2 minutes, or those who have completed Swim Kids 8. JLC provides an action-packed challenge for kids who love the water but who want more than “lessons.” JLC is for quick learners, those between levels or programs and who thrive in an energetic learning environment.
Bronze Star provides training for your body and your brain. You’ll become a stronger swimmer. You’ll learn CPR and practice problem-solving and decision-making.The Bronze Star award is the pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and it provides excellent preparation for success in obtaining the Bronze Medallion award. In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and as partners. They learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and they develop Water Smart® confidence and lifesaving skills. Prerequisites: Completed Swim Kids 10.
Bronze medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education — judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers learn to respond to increasingly complex resuscitation situations involving conscious and unconscious victims with an obstructed airway. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for the Bronze Cross Award.Prerequisites: Minimum age 13 years old.
Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork. Lifesavers learn how to rescue a spinal-injured victim and a pulse-less victim. Bronze Cross is the prerequisite award for all advanced training programs in lifesaving, lifeguarding and leadership.Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion (does not have to be current), 14 years of age within 30 days of the exam.

CBS Silhouettes Synchronized Swimming Club
Synchronized swimming is an Olympic sport that is a blend of swimming, gymnastics and dance. This dramatic style of swimming relies heavily on teamwork and builds self-discipline, endurance, strength, flexibility, grace, and artistry.
Established in 1990, the CBS Silhouettes Synchronized Swimming Club’s home is the CBS Recreation Center’s pool, where the club’s two programs are offered. The Recreational Program teams meet once per week; swimmers have fun while learning the basics of synchronized swimming. The Competitive Program consists of 4 teams that meet several times per week, depending on the age group of a team. Swimmers develop their strength, flexibility, and synchro skills. Each of teams within the two programs practice and perform a routine at The CBS Silhouettes Annual Water Show. The synchro season is 10 months long, from September through June. Throughout the season, members of each program take part in assessments in our home pool, as well as competitions that happen locally and across the country. Teams have won a full range of medals from Bronze to Gold at competition, and The Silhouettes have proudly sent club members to the Canada Winter Games and the NL Summer Games.
Interested in trying this amazing sport? The Silhouettes host a free Try Synchro Day on each of the 2 weekends following Labor Day in September. The Try Synchro Days are for swimmers aged 6 and up, who are comfortable swimming in the deep end of the pool, and are able to follow instruction from a coach.
