Christmas crime prevention tips

Nothing can ruin your Christmas spirit faster than becoming the victim of a crime! Here are some safety and crime prevention tips to remember over the holidays:

  • Do not display gifts in windows or doorways
  • Properly dispose of gift packaging and boxes. Do not leave outside to advertise to thieves the contents of your home
  • When travelling over the holidays be sure to make your home look lived in: have lights, radios and TVs on timers
  • Have someone you know check on your home daily, collet the mail and shovel the driveway
  • If leaving a vehicle in the driveway, have someone move it periodically to make it appear that it is being used
  • Leave shades and blinds in normal positions
  • Do not leave ‘out of town’ messages on your voicemail/email

Shopping in Person and Online

  • Keep watch of your purse and belongings at all times
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash
  • Make sure employees only swipe your card once
  • When shopping, remember where you parked your car and scan the interior before entering to ensure no one is hiding inside
  • Keep all valuables and gifts out of site and in the trunk
  • Do not browse online retailers through a search engine, instead log onto the website by typing in the URL in the browser
  • Look for a padlock icon in the upper corners to verify that the page is secure
  • Use a credit card rather than a debit card online so a payment can be stopped quickly if there is a problem

Vehicle safety

  • Don’t leave your keys in the car while it is running, even when warming it up in the morning
  • Park in well-lit and travelled areas when at the mall or out celebrating
  • Obey all traffic signals
  • Reduce speed and exercise caution when driving in inclement weather
  • Distracted driving is a no! Pull over to answer calls, texting, eating, reading a map, pets/kids, etc.
  • Have directions and check road conditions before travelling
  • Keep a first aid kit and blanket in case of an unexpected emergency

Celebrate Safely

  • Do not leave your drink unattended
  • Stay in groups when at a venue or function
  • Pre-arrange transportation, to ensure a safe ride home
  • Always let someone know where you are going and notify them when you are home safely
  • Lastly, NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE – please convince others to do the same – nobody wants to lose a loved one
