Reduced Speed Limit in School Zones In Effect

Effective immediately, motorists have to reduce their speeds to a maximum of 30 km/hr when driving through various school zones in Conception Bay South.

Mayor Darrin Bent, along with Deputy Chief Colin McNeil, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), and John Barrington, Principal, Admiral’s Academy, spoke today at a press conference to inform the public of the new speed limit and to discuss back to school safety.

“Many schools in our community are located along Route 60, which is the commercial spine of Conception Bay South and the fifth busiest road in this province. We also have approximately 5,000 students in our K-12 school facilities. As the second largest municipality in Newfoundland and Labrador, we have some of the most heavily travelled roads and therefore, traffic calming issues are among the greatest concerns Councillors hear from residents. Council is committed to enhancing public safety, especially for school children,” said Mayor Bent.

Mayor Bent thanked the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure for working with the Town to ensure the 30 km/hr speed limits were implemented, in effect 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on days when school is regularly held.

The school locations are as follows:

  • Topsail Elementary, Route 60, Topsail Road
  • Villanova Junior High / Holy Spirit High School, Route 60, Topsail Road
  • Frank Roberts Junior High / Queen Elizabeth High School, Route 61, Foxtrap Access Road
  • St. Edward’s / Admiral’s Academy, Route 60, near Red Bridge Road
  • Upper Gullies Elementary, Route 60, near Roberts Road
  • St. George’s Elementary, Route 60, Conception Bay Highway

In 2018, the Town proudly welcomed a new RNC detachment to Conception Bay South. Having a strong police presence has greatly enhanced safety throughout the community. The Town continues to partner with RNC on important safety initiatives.

In 2022, the Town budgeted $90,000 for traffic calming measures to promote safety on roads, which is on par with the highest amount ever budgeted for this service. Traffic calming measures include, but are not limited to: installing speed humps, line painting, digital traffic signs and other types of signage. This year, the Town also installed pedestrian activated traffic lights along Route 60, near the Topsail Elementary/ Villanova Junior High school area, to further increase safety for pedestrians.
