Conception Bay South, NL – The Town of Conception Bay South wishes to advise residents that the swimming pool will be closed for 14-16 weeks to allow the pool’s Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system to be replaced. All other activities scheduled to take place in the Recreation Complex, including squash, private fitness classes, playgroup and birthday parties (without use of the pool) will continue as scheduled. The Recreation Complex has two separate HVAC systems – one for the pool and one for all other areas. The second HVAC system remains fully operational.
“Unfortunately, while investigating an unrelated issue that occurred at the pool late last week, our maintenance contractor determined that the HVAC system had failed and recommended it be replaced,” said Mayor French. “Rather than proceed with a band-aid solution that may or may not have fixed the problem, Council opted to proceed with the replacement now. While we recognize that this will be a disappointment and inconvenience for many of our pool users, and apologize for that, we feel that proceeding with the full emergency replacement at this time is in the best long term interests of the pool and those who use it.”
The pool’s HVAC system will be dismantled and removed from the facility and preparations will take place for the installation of a new and more efficient HVAC system. While the unanticipated closure is unfortunate, it provides the opportunity to redesign the family change room to be more accessible for families, upgrade the pump room, and complete the regular maintenance initiatives that would normally have been completed during the annual August shutdown.
Pool management are working collaboratively with user groups to ensure a successful conclusion to their swim seasons at outside facilities.
Any residents, and non-residents, who have registered for swim lessons, shallow water fitness classes, or birthday parties will be refunded. Staff have begun contacting those affected directly.
“The Town of Conception Bay South looks forward to welcoming back all families, youth, adults and seniors to the pool upon re-opening. We would like to thank the residents of Conception Bay South for their understanding, support and cooperation and apologize for the inconvenience this unscheduled repair may cause,” said Mayor French.
Regular updates on the progress of the repairs will be communicated on social media and the Town’s website. Should anyone have specific questions, they are encouraged to call the Recreation Complex at 834-6500 ext. 609/610.
