The Town of Conception Bay South, in partnership with Take Action on Radon, is once again offering free radon test kits to residents. Starting Thursday, November 7, at 10:30 a.m., residents can register online for one of 200 test kits, available on a first-come, first-served basis, at www.conceptionbaysouth.ca/take-action-on-radon.
“Radon is present in homes across Canada, and testing is the only way to determine if levels are elevated in your home and if action is needed. We’re pleased to offer this proactive initiative for a second straight year, helping residents test their homes during the fall when radon levels tend to be higher due to reduced ventilation,” said Mayor Darrin Bent.
Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, and odourless gas that can seep into homes through cracks in the foundation. It is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers across Canada. The Town’s initial radon testing program in 2023 distributed over 100 free test kits to residents, and the 2024 Community Report revealed that that 30% of the 110 homes tested in Conception Bay South had radon levels exceeding the Canadian guideline. This year’s program aims to support more residents in testing their homes and understanding radon’s health risks.
To further support residents, Take Action on Radon will host a free online Radon Information Session on Monday, November 25, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. This session will cover the health effects of radon, Health Canada’s recommendations for homeowners, and give participants details on where and when to pick up their free radon detector.
Funding for this initiative is provided by the Town of Conception Bay South and Health Canada.
About Take Action on Radon
Take Action on Radon is a national initiative funded by Health Canada that brings together radon stakeholders to increase radon awareness across Canada. Led by the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists and the Canadian Cancer Society, this initiative supports the National Radon Plan, which has driven awareness and testing for over a decade. Health Canada recommends that all buildings be tested for radon, yet many Canadians have still not tested. Now is the time.
