This year, the Town of Conception Bay South saw an unprecedented level of road enhancements completed to 60 roads throughout the entire community. The significant project had an investment of $9.2 million, with the main priority focused on resident safety and creating better, safer, wider, and soother roads.
The overwhelming majority of this work was completed on schedule, and for a project of this magnitude, the Town is happy to report that it was all within budget. The Town has seen substantial enhancements to our road infrastructure. Over the last two years, more than $1.1 million has been spent on building new sidewalks in school zones. Last year, Council increased our traffic calming budget to $90,000, an amount three-times higher than what was traditionally spent in this area. This allowed road upgrades for safety purposes, such as additional signage, pavement markings, flashing radar signs, and speed humps.
Next week, when Budget 2020 is presented, residents will see a continuous, noteworthy investment being made to roads and resident safety. The ultimate goal of Council is to make town roads better for everyone – pedestrians, motorists, bicyclists, businesses, and visitors. Council knows this is important to you, and they are working hard to make it happen.
Road safety and quality of work are precedent, especially as we enter into the latter part of the construction season. As a result, there will be a limited amount of road work carried over into 2020. This involves the upper section of Fowlers Road and the upper portion of Tilleys Road South. This work will be completed next year, along with the final surface work that was always planned for 2020. The contractors have committed to ensuring these two roads will be of acceptable quality for the winter months.
While this is critical work for Conception Bay South, the Town also acknowledges that road work is a major frustration and inconvenience for residents. The Town thanks all residents for their cooperation and understanding.
