May 9 is a very special day for Louise and Bernie Mercer of Conception Bay South, NL.

This was the date in 1993 that their beautiful daughter, Alex, was born. On the same date in 1998, their charming son, Riley, was born. Imagine, your two children sharing the same birthday! What cannot be imagined, however, is the grief of losing your two young children to rare forms of brain cancer. Alex was only 9 years old and Riley, just 15. 

To honour their memories, the Mercer’s organize a birthday celebration and memorial food drive each year on May 9. 

From 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., please visit the Salvation Army Conception Bay South Corps to make a donation to the CBS/Paradise Community Food Bank.
