On November 2, 2021, Council for the Town of Conception Bay South issued a permit to Ocean Choice International to commence their infill/wharf/finger pier project in Long Pond. The issuing of this permit follows a recent decision from the Eastern Newfoundland Regional Appeal Board (ENRAB), that found the Town acted appropriately in approving the Ocean Choice development earlier this year. A copy of the ENRAB decision can be found on the Town’s website.
During the Public Council Meeting of June 29, 2021, Council voted unanimously to approve a revised development application presented by Ocean Choice. This approval was subject to several conditions for construction permitting, and other general conditions, that have since been met by Ocean Choice. Those conditions required the receipt of federal and provincial regulatory approvals prior to construction.
The approved Ocean Choice development represents a $15-$20 million-dollar investment in Conception Bay South, with significant economic spin-offs, including increased activity for local retailers and suppliers, an economic boost to the Long Pond Harbour Authority, and potential migration of current industry workers.
“This investment in Conception Bay South by Ocean Choice International, a thriving, locally owned and operated Newfoundland and Labrador company, speaks loudly that our Town is truly open for business, and is a key player in business attraction.” said Mayor Darrin Bent. “Investments from businesses, both big and small, play an important role for all residents of our town by increasing the commercial tax base, and shielding them from further tax burden. We vow to continue to make business attraction a priority.”
Following issuance of the permit, Ocean Choice has the ability to commence construction at a time of their choosing, and has engaged contractors to begin preliminary site investigation work over the coming weeks, which will likely involve the use of barges. During the development process, Ocean Choice has committed to keep area residents well informed of their activities through the use of safety and construction advisories.
