Back to School Safety

Welcome Back to School, Students!

As the new school year begins, the Town of Conception Bay South is reminding motorists to be extra vigilant around school areas and to anticipate increased traffic on the roads. Conception Bay South, known for its strong family and community values, is home to approximately 5,000 students attending nine schools. As the second-largest municipality in Newfoundland and Labrador, these roads are among the busiest in the province. It is essential for everyone to be extra cautious as students head back to class.

Safety in School Zones

Since 2017, when the Town first implemented its sidewalk program, approximately 5 kilometers of new sidewalks have been installed, focusing on areas near schools to protect our pedestrians, especially our children.

In addition to these improvements, the Town introduced reduced speed limits in several school areas. In 2022, speed limits were reduced to 30 kilometers per hour from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on regular school days, in the following areas:

  • Topsail Elementary
  • Villanova Junior High and Holy Spirit High School
  • St. George’s Elementary
  • Frank Roberts Junior High and Queen Elizabeth High School
  • St. Edward’s and Admiral’s Academy
  • Upper Gullies Elementary

Back to School Safety Reminders

  • Allow extra time for travel. Expect increased traffic and plan your route accordingly.
  • Navigate school zones with extra care, particularly during peak times—morning, lunchtime, and after school.
  • Never pass a stopped school bus!
  • Be alert for children crossing the street, boarding buses, and walking along sidewalks.
  • Drive responsibly.

To all the school kids and administrative staff in Conception Bay South—have a happy and safe first week back to school!
