The Town of Conception Bay South is pleased to be working with Take Action on Radon to raise awareness of the dangers of radon gas. Together, we invite Conception Bay South residents to participate in the “100 Radon Test Kit Challenge”, a program that provides free radon test kits to residents throughout our community.
Radon is a well-established human carcinogen, and testing and reducing radon levels is essential for lung cancer prevention. Radon is a colourless, odourless gas that can infiltrate buildings. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and can be found in elevated concentrations in homes across the country. The good news is that it is relatively easy to test for and mitigate radon levels in your home. Since 2017, the National Building Code of Canada has mandated a rough-in for future radon venting in new homes. For homes built before 2017, radon venting can be retrofitted within the property.
For residents of Conception Bay South, now is the perfect time to Take Action on Radon. Only 100 free kits are available, so please sign up now for the program by visiting the following link: https://form.jotform.com/232878537634267
Once registered, residents will be encouraged to attend the virtual Radon Information Session via Zoom on Thursday, November 16, at 7 p.m. A Zoom link will be e-mailed to everyone who signs up for the program. Participants will be able to pick up their radon test kits from Friday, November 17 to Friday, November 24, at the Conception Bay South Town Hall during regular business hours.
Once participants have conducted the radon testing in their homes, the results will be sent to Take Action On Radon. Subsequently, residents will receive individualized reports indicating the radon levels in their homes, if any. The Town of Conception Bay South will also receive an aggregated report, providing an overview of radon levels within the community.
This is a fantastic opportunity to ensure your home is safe from radon. Conception Bay South is committed to the health and well-being of its residents and aims to raise awareness about radon exposure through this important initiative. Don’t miss this chance to protect your family and your home from the risks of radon.
Funding for this project is provided by Health Canada.
